First editions of one of Hemingway's most enduring novels in facsimile jackets, so priced at about 10% of what you would expect to pay for an example in a real jacket. For Whom the Bell Tolls by Ernest Hemingway Hardcover First Edition - First Printing (presence of "A" on the title page") Charles Scribner's Sons 1940 471 pages in original oatmeal/tan cloth. Original jacket not present but a Facsimile Dust Jacket is provided. (In the present condition, if this copy had a near fine original dust jacket, the price would be about $1500+.) Near Fine+ in Fine Facsimile Dust Jacket An overall nice copy (without the original dust jacket), clean
and very presentable. The only shortcomings include some dark staining to the text-block edge at the top and upper right-hand side but does not affect the inner pages, signature and bookplate present on front end-paper, and typical age-toning to the pages but overall pretty nice. Else this copy grades at nearly fine. This is a nice alternative to
the first edition/first printing in original dust jacket which typically
fetches $1000 to $2000 in near fine condition in like dust jacket. I've
seen some copies offered at $2500 and some signed copies offered at
$10,000+. Made into a film starring Gary Cooper and Ingrid Bergman in 1942. NOTE on Edition : For Whom the Bell Tolls is
one of about four or five novels by Ernest Hemingway regarded as his
literary masterpieces, along with The Sun Also Rises, A Farewell to
Arms, and The Old Man and the Sea. The first printing of 1940 had a
hefty run of about 75,000 copies but remains in the top 50 most-sought
after first editions of American literature of the 20th century,
excluding genre fiction. The novel had been selected to win the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1941 but then President of
Columbia University persuaded the Pulitzer jury not to give the award to
Hemingway because he found the novel offensive. As a result, there was no award given in 1941 for books published in
1940. "The Trees" by Conrad Richter and "The Ox-Bow Incident" by Walter Van Tiburg Clark were also viable contenders. NOTE: All modern books with dust jackets come with dust jacket covers. ALSO: The pictures are of the actual item for sale. (The pictures are NOT stock photos.) IMPORTANT NOTE :
All sales are generally FINAL. I do NOT accept returns because of
buyer's remorse, "it was a gift but the recipient already had it", or "I
found the same book at a better price". These are not new items, and each item is priced based on condition and current availability. Returns are only accepted because of
discrepancies regarding edition and/or condition of which I try to be
very thorough in researching the edition/printing as well as describing
ALL condition issues. So make sure you're 100% positive you desire one
of my items before making a purchase. NOTE on FEEDBACK: If you have problem with an order for any reason, please contact me before leaving feedback! 99% of the time we can resolve the problem. It is much more difficult to change feedback once left. A Word on First Editions : 95% of my offerings are trade editions, and 90% of those are first printings. In general I do NOT sell bookclub editions or cheap reprints like Modern Library except in rare instances which would be explicitly stated as such. In general, I also DO NOT sell x-library copies. If the book is both a first edition AND a first printing , it will be marked as “first edition” in the Item Specifics under “ Special Attributes” , otherwise assume a later printing or a later edition. NOTE on USPS Shipping : The US Post has graciously increased their rates! I ship on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays sometimes on Friday. I do not ship on Mondays and Saturdays. FREE shipping and confirmation in the U.S. only via media mail (1-3 weeks). Make sure your current address is on Ebay and/or Paypal! All books are bubble-wrapped, and those costing over $50 will be placed in a box. My shipping costs are slightly more than others because I use dust jacket covers, bubble-wrap, and boxes. The extra $1 or so is worth it to protect your book! FYI, media mail is a discount shipping rate for books and CD's. It is not the same as first class mail, and you can't expect items to arrive in the same time frame. They typically take 1 1/2 to 3 weeks. Items shipped media mail take longer than a letter which is first class. PLEASE contact me if you would like a reduction in shipping costs for multiple purchases sent to a single address. (not always possible with international shipping.) ATTENTION Canadian and International customers: $15 international priority mail with required tracking. (I now require international tracking on all items over $50) There may be a delay, sometimes an additional 1 to 8 weeks, if your package is inspected by your country's custom's inspectors. I cannot be responsible (and I have no control over) delays due to customs inspections. It is best to find out your country's policies in this regard. Any further questions, please email me. I try my very best to accurately describe condition. Disputes in condition of items must be resolved within 15 days of shipment of item. Track Page Views With Auctiva's FREE Counter
